Cynthia Kelly, M.D., Children’s Specialty Group, was promoted to the rank of Professor, Department of Pediatrics.

Kenji Cunnion, M.D., Children’s Specialty Group, was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor of Pediatrics.

Angela Hogan, M.D., Children’s Specialty Group, was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics.

Dr. Theresa Guins was Instrumental in Senate Bill #228, adding EMS providers to the list of mandated reporters of child abuse/neglect. The bill has been unanimously passed by the Senate and now moves to the House for approval. If passed and signed by the Governor, the education division of the State Office of EMS, in conjunction with the EMS for Children program, will then begin a statewide education process to ensure that all EMS providers are trained in recognizing signs of child abuse/neglect and the proper channels for reporting their suspicions.

Dr. Guins was also asked by the State Office of Emergency Medical Services and the Commissioner of the State Health Department to join the Regional EMS Council Designation Service Area Process Action Team. This will be a group of 14 individuals from around the state selected to review and make recommendations regarding the re-designation of the EMS Regional Councils and their service areas.

Joel S. Brenner, MD, MPH
Children’s Specialty Group, Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, Sports Medicine and Adolescent Medicine Dr. Brenner’s article, Overdoing It in Youth Sports, was named one of the top ten pediatric stories of 2007 by Journal Watch Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, January 2008, Vol. 7 No. 1.

Other recent accomplishments include:

  • Appointment to the Preparticipation Physical Evaluation working group to write the new monograph/ guidelines for sports physicals.
  • Reappointment as the AAP representative to the Joint Commission on Sports Medicine and Science.
  • Presented to the Virginia Beach Recreational Basketball Coaches on "Recognition of Common Sports Injuries."
  • Named Co-Medical Director of the Shamrock Sportsfest Marathon / Half-marathon/ 8K
  • Became one of the Team physicians for Virginia Wesleyan College.

January 2008

L. Matthew Frank, MD, Children’s Specialty Group, was selected to serve on the Pediatric Content Committee of the American Epilepsy Society which also serves as a subcommittee for epilepsy topics to the Child Neurology Society.

November 2007

Faiqa A. Qureshi MD, Children’s Specialty Group, received a special letter of commendation from the American Heart Association for her volunteer contribution to the Pediatric Resuscitation Subcommittee of the Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) Committee. The Pediatric Resuscitation Subcommittee is tasked with reviewing the relevant resuscitation science and developing guidelines for resuscitation. In addition, the members of the Subcommittee are responsible for translating those guidelines into training materials for basic life support, and neonatal and pediatric advanced life support. The guidelines serve as the resource to guide resuscitation nationally and internationally.

Ed Karotkin, MD, Children’s Specialty Group, Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, and Joel Clingenpeel, MD, CSG, Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, were recently awarded the "Member of Honor" induction into the Dominican Society of Pediatrics.

Special thanks to Eric Lowe, MD, Division of Hematology/Oncology, for taking the lead on the Norfolk smoking ban which was approved and will go into effect March 31, 2008.

Dr. Thomas Bass is awarded $750,000 NIH grant to study brain-cooling therapy. Dr. Thomas Bass, a Neonatologist at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, will lead clinical trials of a $750,000 National Institutes of Health study that he hopes will help reduce brain damage in oxygen-deprived infants.

Dr. C.W. Gowen, Jr., was awarded a Special Recognition Certificate by the American Academy of Pediatrics Education Award Subcommittee for his contributions to Education in Pediatrics.

The Department of Pediatrics awarded Reem Raafat, MD, the “Faculty Teaching Award” for outstanding contribution to medical student education during the Pediatric Clerkship 2007-2008.

Joel Clingenpeel, M.D., Assistant Professor, was selected by the Emergency Medicine residents to receive their Outstanding Clinical Instructor Award in recognition of his outstanding teaching skills and contribution to their education.

Chairman, Donald Lewis, has just been named Associate Editor of Headache, the Journal of the American Headache Society.

Cynthia Kelly, MD, named Vice Chairman of Pediatrics for Research
Cynthia Kelly, MD, was named vice chairman of Pediatrics for Research. Dr. Kelly will become director of the Center for Pediatric Research in her new role as vice chairman of Pediatrics for Research, as announced by department Chairman, Dr. Don Lewis, this week. Dr. Kelly joined EVMS in 1994 and is currently division director of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. She is also a distinguished researcher and faculty member at the Center for Pediatric Research where she is principal investigator on "Allies Against Asthma," a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in the amount of $1,350.000, and a $1 million HUD grant, "Newport News Healthy Homes Initiative."
